Weekend Recap Jan 13th and Midweek Preview Jan 17th

A good week with Son and Koo both making various teams of the week and some midweek action as well for those of us trapped by a millimeter of ice.

Suk Hyun Jun -- Started and played the full 90 but didn't get to watch. He should start.

Ki Sung Yueng -- Right back into starting lineup and played the full 90, first starting as the deepest DM in a midfield three, then shifting to the left at some point. He did have a few more mistakes than usual, but when he got involved in attack, good things happened, such as switching play to the right in the lead up to their goal. I expect there to be some adaptation time for Ki and Carvahal but Ki looked good despite his missed time. Ideally he would be rested midweek coming off of first minutes of the year, but perhaps Carvahal will want to field a stronger team and get momentum. Should be in the squad but

Kwon Chang Hoon -- Came on as a sub, perhaps reflecting issues in previous week. Sounded like he had a positive impact. Perhaps he will be on bench again vs PSG in favor of more defensive option but will be in squad and maybe fairly likely to start if 100% fit.

Ji Dong Won -- Still out with the knee injury. Baum said that he should be back soon, but it feels frustratingly too late when Cordova was so, so bad. Finnbogason is getting fitter and so a great opportunity to earn some minutes appears to be going away.

Koo Ja Cheol -- Playing a more advanced role with Khedira and Baier both at DM, Koo rewarded Baum with a goal. I was surprised to read that it was Koo's first of the season. And his advanced positioning was a key factor as he was able to attack a cross into the box and head in well. It seemed Baum tried him in a variety of roles all match, starting him out to the right, then at CM, CAM and 2nd striker. A good

Lee Chung Yong -- Another week, another one spent warming bench as Hodgson doesn't even use a single sub.

Son Heung Min -- I guess best for last as Son continues to mature and take advantage of weaker fullbacks and turn those opportunities into MOTM showings. Opened up the scoring with a great run to make space and then latch onto an Aurier cross, and then showed his skills spinning around FB and crossing a great pass for Kane to score. Also had a hand in a great three pass move for Eriksen's goal. It feels incredible that the dips in Son's form are shallowing out and becoming so infrequent. After a slow start, probably due to time off from broken arm, Son seems to have really found himself, and Pochettino also has figured out how to best exploit Son against more types of teams. Normally, Son has a hard time against compact, Allardyce-type teams, but this weekend he had no such troubles. If he can add in the flair that allowed him to continuously open up defenders as he did Saturday, Son may have new levels of quality to reach. An incredible showing only marred by a few shots against woodwork/just wide when he could have added to his goal total.
